t was supposed to be “the war to end all wars.” Instead, it opened the floodgate to a century of
ethnic, religious, and ideological conflicts throughout the globe, all of it traceable to some extent
to the entangled animosities and unprecedented carnage of World War I and the shortsighted,
easily shattered peace that followed it. Now there is a single reference work that captures the full
spectrum of the war from its tangled origins to its tragic legacy.
The Encyclopedia of World War I offers:
• 1,200 A-Z entries covering important events, cultural and political biographies, geopolitical
agreements, social issues, and much more
• 175 contributors, including scholars from around the world, giving this encyclopedia an
unprecedented global perspective
• A separate primary source volume with over 200 official documents, diary entries, and
letters from all types of people involved in the war, with introductory information to place
the documents in historical context
• A wealth of new information on the pacifist movement, wartime atrocities, the role of women on
the battlefield and at home, and the efforts to establish international tribunals after the conflict
• In-depth discussions of the role of technology in the war, including the first sustained strategic
deployment of tanks, machine guns, aerial bombardment, and chemical weapons
With over 1,200 entries plus an additional volume of primary sources, The Encyclopedia of World
War I is the definitive reference on a struggle whose aftershocks are still being felt.
